Aristo-pets: Dogs from the upper crust

Which breeds reign supreme? In celebration of Her Majesty’s official birthday this weekend we take a glimpse at the legendary companions to royals and rulers.

As the Queen celebrates her 90th birthday (congratulations ma’am), we’ve become accustomed to seeing her surrounded by a pack of her beloved corgis. The diminutive herding dogs have been pictured with her since 1936 and are now something of a royal mascot. But it’s not just corgis that have been constant companions to the aristocratic set…

Prince Albert & Eos

Handsome greyhound Eos was given to Prince Albert in 1833 when the future Prince Consort was just 14 – and they soon became as thick as thieves.

The duo spent six years in Albert’s native Germany before embarking on a new adventure together; a move to England, following his engagement to Queen Victoria.

Eos – fond of plum cake and hunting – was always Albert’s dog but he soon became a much-loved favourite, adored by all the royal household.

Winston Churchill & Rufus

While Churchill’s legacy is headlined with his tactical battle choices, he was also well-known as a keen animal lover, counting a budgie called Toby and Nelson the cat among his friends.

When it comes to dogs, the British war leader’s fighting British spirit meant he has long been associated with the bulldog. In fact, his personal pooch preference was a poodle named Rufus.

Rufus accompanied Churchill throughout World War Two before he sadly passed away. But it wasn’t long before another poodle joined Churchill’s inner circle. His name? Rufus II.

Duchess of Cambridge & Lupo

Lupo was a wedding gift to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from Kate’s brother James Middleton in 2011 and has since become a key member of the royal household.

The English Cocker Spaniel was even have said to have picked out Prince George’s name after the couple scattered choices on paper across the room and he sniffed out his favourite.

The pretty pooch has also featured in the tight-knit family’s official portraits since the birth of Prince George – just look at that smile.

Duchess of Cornwall & Bluebell

Having grown up with dogs and cats, it’s no great wonder that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has become a keen supporter of animal welfare.

Beyond making the royal rounds at various animal shelters and homes, Camilla has owned several generations of Jack Russells and has most recently picked up two rescue pups from Battersea Dog’s Home; Bluebell and Beth. She is regularly spotted with the companions by her side.

The Conran Shop’s flagship store

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Founded by Terence Conran, The Conran Shop has grown to be one of the leading lifestyle retailers in the world. Its roots (like LoveMyDog’s) are in London, where it was responsible for the revival of the Michelin House building. The Chelsea Conran Shop is located within the iconic art deco building, which turned 100 last year. If you haven’t seen it in the flesh before it’s well worth a visit (especially the Crustacea Stall located under the covered forecourt).

The flagship Conran Shop currently features LoveMyDog products in its window display, including an Elwin Quilted dog raincoat and a Hoxton Tartan Harris Tweed dog coat.

LoveMyDog’s creative director Lilly Shahravesh says “It was such a buzz the first time I saw LoveMyDog products in The Conran Shop a few years ago. Terence Conran is such a god-like character in the design world and I felt I’d really made it.’

Lilly adds “It was fantastic to be recognised as a top quality designer brand after years of hard work. They’ve just decided to launch our flagship line, the Hoxton Tartan collection, and I’m thrilled all over again. With Conran’s amazing reputation, that’s the best accolade I could wish for.”

Welcome to London

Deluxe doggy raincoats: Elwin

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

Lilly loves East London, and the inspiration for the name of these particular deluxe doggy raincoats came from a local road called Elwin Street. Rabbit (sporting the olive coat) certainly enjoys his walks there with his friends.

This classic waxed cotton coat caused quite a stir in the canine community when it was featured in the “Truly British Pet-a-Porter Dog Fashion Show” at Harrods London, alongside creations by Vivienne Westwood and Ben de Lisi. Waterproof, windproof and snug, it’s truly a dog coat for all seasons.

The Elwin doggy raincoats are available in navy or olive, and in a range of sizes. For more details click here.

Dogs of London by Anna Walsh

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

The images above were created by the talented Anna Walsh. She has exhibited around London and we think her ‘Dogs of London’ Map, and hand coloured individual dog prints are fab. You can see more of Anna’s work at her website here and a larger version of her Dog Map (sadly no Rabbit for Hackney) here.

Hair of the dog

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Based off Brick Lane opposite Spitalfields in London, The Golden Heart is a dog friendly pub that we and our muse Rabbit love. It’s famous for the eccentric landlady and is a favourite hang out for local artists & celebs, so dont be surprised to find Tracy Emin or Kate Moss standing next to you having a pint!

This is a photo of the resident dog who is always dozing away. For some reason there is a corgi cut out behind his bed and he sits outside the Ladies loo. Does anyone know his name? Let us know your ideas by leaving a comment.

If you want to find a dog friendly pub near you, or want to let others know about your favourite local then www.doggiepubs.org.uk is well worth a visit.

Unlikely London inspiration?

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Popped out of the studio for 5 minutes earlier and took a double take at the ground. I thought the colours of London’s Hackney Road drying could work perfectly for Autumn/Winter.

What do you think?
